Forage Crops and Grasslands
AnSc 499 OL (CpSc 414) is offered jointly with Crop Sciences, Ag Education and Animal Sciences. Instructors are Dr. Ben Tracy and Dr. Mike Hutjens. Guest lecturers include Ed Ballard, Dick Cobb, Dave Fischer, Dr. Kevin Kline, Dean Oswald and Justin Sexten. This course will cover the role of forage crops in a productive agriculture. Field physiology will involve photosynthesis, nutrient absorption, nitrogen fixation, and the various environmental aspects related to forage management. Forage fertilization will also be discussed. Each of the forage legumes and grasses will be presented as to their role and management in today's agriculture and grassland ecology. Harvest and storage management will be discussed as to how to produce and preserve quality forages; the importance in animal nutrition; and the economics of selling and transporting forages. The use of forages as they relate to dairy and beef cattle, horses, goats and other species will be discussed.
Training ModulesTraining modules for the class will be downloadable and are on average 10 to 15 minutes in length. The modules are lectures given by the particular subject matter expert. It is in the student's best interest to review the training modules before the weekly discussion. |
